Segria covers a large area in the far western part of Catalonia. The backbone (NE-SW) is the lower valley of the river Segre, hence the name. The river and the canals (Urgell and Aragó i Catalunya) and the dense network of irrigation channels that run off them water the fertile lands, but the character of the region is provided by the city of Lleida, the capital of Western Catalonia since the distant past. The territory has therefore always been under the sway of Lleida, an Iberian city, Roman town and centre of an important Muslim province, which the Christian Reconquest (1149) divided between the counties of Barcelona and Urgell and other church domains. Lleida, protected by the Catalan monarchs, became the see of a large bishopric and seat of the first university (Estudi General) in Catalonia. The city’s strategic importance has involved it in all the main events and conflicts of the country. The economy has been traditionally based on the rich agriculture, stock-breeding and the industrial activities derived from them, concentrated mainly in Lleida, which is a major services centre whose influence overflows into neighbouring Aragon. There is not much tourist infrastructure, though many visitors come to the city to appreciate the architectural heritage.
