Solsonès is in the hinterland of Catalonia between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the central depression. The nothern part is mountainous: Turp and Odèn sierras, Port del Comte (2,332 m), El Verd, Els Bastets and Busa, where the Ribera Salada and Cardener valleys are formed (Vall de Lord), whilst the southern part consists of a series of plateaux. The landscape is very beautiful and most of the small population —Solsona and Sant Llorenç de Morunys are the main towns— is scattered around farmhouses, some of which are fine examples of 16th to 18th century architecture. Solsonès was part of the mediaeval county of Cardona. In 1593 the bishopric of Solsona was created. Agriculture and stock-breeding and exploitation of the woodland have been the traditional economic activities, with small industrial centres (sawmills, textiles, metal, food). The peace and beauty of many of the spots, the ski resort at Port del Comte and the architectural heritage, among other things, have boosted tourist activity.
