Terra Alta is a sparsely populated inland comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. Its capital is Gandesa. It is also known as Castellania, a name dating back to its medieval status as a fiefdom held by the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem under the Crown of Aragon.

Terra Alta is part of the so-called Ebro lands —though the river only flows along a small sector in the north; the border with Aragon (Matarranya) is marked by the line of the river Algars. The land slopes steeply, especially in the southern sector, with the buttresses of the northern part of the mountain passes of Ports de Tortosa (rocks of En Benet), or the harshly beautiful Pàndols and Cavalls sierras, dotted with captivating places. Repopulated in mediaeval times by the military order of the Templars, Gandesa was the chief town of the bailiwick of Miravet, whilst Horta de Sant Joan was the headquarters of a Templar (later Hospitaller) command. During the Spanish Civil War, the fierce fighting on the Ebro front inflicted severe punishment on these lands. The economy is based on agriculture and the geographical isolation of the region has slowed down its process of industrialisation. The wines are renowned (they have Terra Alta guarantee of origin), as is the olive oil, which has been produced for the last century by the agricultural cooperatives which provide one of the local attractions, along with towns and villages of great character and interesting monuments.
