Cambrils

The origin of the town of Cambrils dates back to pre-history. However it wasn't until the Roman era that the number of inhabitants began to increase significantly in the place where current-day Cambrils stands. This is shown by the archaeological remains found throughout the region, such as in Llosa, which benefited from its proximity to the capital Tàrraco and the Vía Augusta. Today you can find out about the most ancient history up to the fall of the Roman Empire in the Molí de les Tres Eres Museum, the main venue of the Cambrils Museum of History.

In medieval times the first permanent settlement had already been established on the right bank of the Alforja River. In 1152, the Catalan-Aragonese crown, after retaking the "New Catalonia" from the Muslims, granted a series of privileges to repopulate the area called Cambrils. So it was in the 12th century when the first steps towards a stable population centre were taken at the southern entrance to the Tarragona region. The accessibility provided by the passage of the Camino Real (royal road) connecting Tortosa to Tarragona added to its attraction. It was also easily accessible by sea, as was demonstrated in 1229 when the troops of King Jaime I set off from its beaches to conquer Mallorca.

These characteristics motivated the crown to maintain royal ownership of the municipality and establish a feudal lord, vassal to the count-king, to post  a detail of troops and to build city walls and towers to protect other dependant villages, such as Tegells, les Planes or Montbrió. The royal initiative allowed the city to grow from a small village to the current 'barri antic' (historic quarter) with a church, hostel, chapel, hospital, convent, market, fairgrounds, craftspeople and above all, farmers who worked the rich plains that still surround Cambrils today.

The livelihood of the township was put in serious jeopardy in December of 1640, when the people of Cambrils experienced one of the worse episodes of the Catalan Revolt in which Catalonia clashed with King Felipe IV. Faced with a superior army, the townspeople of Cambrils resisted a terrible three-day siege before surrendering. Contrary to agreement, the occupying forces killed a large number of the defenders who had already surrendered and a good part of the town wall was destroyed. Unfortunately, this is one of the most significant historical events that has ever occurred in our town, which is why it is commemorated year after year in the Plaça del Setge, in front of the remains of the walls.

Despite all this, in the 18th century the town began to grow, which was reflected in the appearance of shacks outside the walled area. Meanwhile, thanks to the construction of the Torre del Port or Dels Moros (the port tower or the Moors tower), the area that is currently Cambrils old port quarter started building up. For centuries, the seashore had been a very dangerous place to live due to constant pirate attacks. They would frequently kidnap or kill fishermen or other people who didn't seek refuge in the walled section quickly enough. The small medieval villages of Mas d'en Bisbe, Vilagrassa and Vilafortuny, - the latter boasting its own church and castle, also suffered from the effects of piracy, which played a key role in holding back the development of these towns and ultimately led to their annexation in the 19th century to the municipality of Cambrils. With time, and once the danger had passed, families of fishermen and sailors built homes around the Torre del Port or Dels Moros, thus founding the neighbourhood where centuries later, in the middle of the 20th century, the enclosed harbour would be built, which is currently one of Cambrils most recognisable landmarks.

In addition to continuing the production of flour in various hydraulic mills, starting in the 19th century slowly but surely small factories began being built for the manufacture of products such as spirits and construction materials such as bricks, and the for construction of bigger and bigger boats, among other things. The inauguration of the train line in 1867 was a great boost for commerce, agriculture and local fishing, despite continuous warfare, epidemics and the havoc wreaked by the weather in the 19th century. The beginning of the 20th century was accompanied by the start of a population boom, which accelerated dramatically in the fifties with the arrival of various migratory waves from within Spain.

In the early sixties our town was discovered and promoted as a tourist destination. Housing developments were constructed to take in these recently arrived visitors, who came basically for the fun and sun, the beach and the food from a town with its arms open to the Mediterranean, as Cambrils is.
