Villages that gathered to allow you to explore a great number of itineraires based on culture, leisure activities and active sports (35 sites, and walking, mountain-biking and horse-riding holidays…).
You are offered tours… to discover attractive villages, their beautiful Romanesque churches and ancestral craft know-how (making of whips at Sorède, making of glass at Palau-del-Vidre…).

There are also the ancient stock-farm at Saint-André, the factory of nettle-tree whips and the turtles of the Vallée heureuse at Sorède.
So many visits that will allow you to experience this region and its people. Individual itineraries are also available.

When the coast and hinterland make common cause… Argelès-sur-mer and Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, an attractive spa town nestled in the Vallespir valley, are working in partnership regarding projects such as the "Green Way".
An exclusive way that will connect both villages and will be reserved for non-motorized travels (walking, mountain-biking, cycle-touring, etc…).

Sports
Argelès-sur-Mer has seven kilometres of wide sandy beach, safe and supervised bathing, and numerous little rocky creeks for scuba diving. The Tramontane and Marin winds makes windsurfing and surfing more challenging than in some resorts and all manner of water sports are available here. Argelès has recently earned the title of 'Handiplage' due to its many facilities for the disabled. The town is undertaking a special programme to make the resort more accessible to disabled visitors, including training the staff in the tourist office and the police to better understand the needs of the visually impaired.

Beaches & Rocky Coves

Swimming, sports, walking,... the sea just as you have dreamt about it

The 7-km wide, sandy beach, clear waters and the Albères Mountains dominating the beach. On the seafront, the 12-ha pine forest and 3-km tree-fringed promenade for strolling around. To the south, in the direction of Collioure, the harbour and this small small paradise, le 'Racou' (corner in Catalan)... This blue and green decor provides a beautiful background for the numerous sporting and water activities offered by the seventeen beach clubs.

In the spring and autumn, the beach has plenty of appeal with the sun always present! The light is softer, the beach less... packed, and the leisure activities offered by beach clubs more accessible. The delightful rocky coves of Portells and Ouille, serving as a link with the rocky coast, offer peace and tranquillity...

Blue Flag beaches, Blue Flag boats, Kid Resort... so many European awards given to the town since their creation in 1987. Quality at Argelès-sur-mer... a requirement, an approach in our everyday life, in partnership with all professionals, in order to improve your well-being and environment.
Clean bathing waters (sewage treatment plant 100% biological), sand-beach cleaned everyday ('meractive' ecological process), first aid posts equipped with lookouts and toilets, special ways for disabled people, sanitary facilities and showers, optimized safety, valued heritage, separate collection for household refuse... without neglecting the fact that each accommodation owner wishes to meet your needs and hopes that your stay will be a memorable one.

In Argelès-sur-mer, Quality... is synonymous with tradition of welcoming atmosphere and conviviality, the bus-train (free of charge from 1 October to 31 May) to travel easily 7 days a week, Tourist Office 3* (open all year 7 days a week, 8.30am to 8pm in July and August) at your service.

Cultural Heritage

Museum Casa de les Alberes

The museum Casa de les Albères, located in the heart of the village of Argelès-sur-mer, has been administered by the town since 2003. It houses a museum of popular arts and traditions exhibiting a collection of daily life tools and implements dating from the 19th and 20th centuries and a Catalan library, and offers conducted tours of the town and beach.

The town, the owner of the collections, buildings and an ancient barn situated nearby, has decided to reorganise the property with the aim of giving Casa de les Alberes a territorial and transborder dimension and creating an interpretation centre of L’Albera Massif.

This new structure will provide an area accommodating both permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions. Temporary exhibitions will stage part of the collection and they will be regularly renewed. The future house of L’Albera will also be home of a documentary resources centre and a shop.

The ancient barn will be converted into a storeroom and administrative premises. As works are being carried out during the year 2009, the museum Casa de les Alberes is currently closed.

Notre-Dame-dels-Prats

The parish church dedicated to Notre-Dame-dels-Prats was situated within the ramparts, towards the south-west corner of the walls. The building dates from the 14th century. Its imposing belltower can be seen in the distance. It is dedicated to the Virgin who is called Nostra Senyora dels Prats (Our Lady of Meadows) here.

The church, which was already mentioned in 920, was nearly completely rebuilt in the 14th century in a Gothic style, which is rather unusual in the department. Argelès is the typical example of this architecture in the Roussillon:

  • a vast central nave, for preaching;
  • nine lateral chapels, propitious for the emergence of middle class individuality and the multiplication of the worship of Saints;
  • the austere construction sacrificing the exterior décor for the perfect architectural lines.

The church displays 103 works of art for about thirty Saints. Over the years, the edifice has been altered on several occasions. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the edifice was transformed. The door in Romanesque style was moved to its present place (East). The granite freestones of the 14th-century apse were re-used. A raising made the nave arch. The vault and roof were renovated in the late 18th century.

Restoration has continued with the repairing works of the roof, belltower and façades, the vault, ceiling and lighting.
The repairing works of the floors of the nave and chapels, and the restoration works of the chapels took place in 2004.

During the summer 2008, after the restoration works, the fragment of the predella of St Roch and the Healing Angel has found back its initial place. The major altarpiece and Christ altarpiece are currently under restoration. They will be placed back in the church in the course of the year 2009.

Church Belltower

The church of Notre-Dame-dels-Prats is flanked with a superb belltower in Romanesque style, towering at 34 metres and listed as a historic building. Although its construction was not completed, it is among the highest belltowers in Roussillon.

That is the reason why it has been a signal station and lookout tower, communal belfry, keep and belltower at the same time and successively. It has three storeys: three beautiful rib-vaulted rooms and the area reserved for bells.

At the foot of the keep, place des Saint Côme et Saint Damien, the patrons saints of Argelès, covers the former cemetery which, at the beginning of the 19th century, occupied the area situated between the ramparts and the exterior wall of the nave. The belltower was renovated in 1986-1987.

Ramparts
Texts referred to the ramparts of Argelès in the late 13th century at the time of the Kings of Majorca. Throughout its history, Argelès had to face numerous attacks: siege by the king of Aragon in 1344, occupation of Roussillon by Louis XI, liberation of the town by John II of Aragon.

It was referred to a ditch in front of the ramparts in about 1390. An official document dating from 1397 mentioned the gate of Elne and the gate 'del battle' through which it was possible to go to the castle of Pujol. The third gate gave access to Collioure.

Within the ramparts rise the church of Notre-Dame-dels-Prats and the belltower built in the 14th century. The walls of the town had been damaged quite frequently. Part of the surrounding walls and the quadrangular towers still stands. The curtain was made of pebbles and the angles of the towers were made of cut granite, the golden patina of which is characteristic of the monuments of Argelès.

Castle of Valmy
The monument was built in the late 19th century in the heart of the wine property of the 'mas de Vallmaria' after which it is undoubtedly named. It was created by the Danish architect Viggo Dorp-Petersen whose works used to be much appreciated by the rich families of the region.

The building work started in 1888 on the initiative of the manufacturer Pierre Bardou, the owner of JOB paper cigarette mills. The castle was completed in the 1900s and still retains its original aspect.
It should be noted that its roof, made of red tiles decorated with ceramics, is laid on a reinforced concrete structure which was rather exceptional for that time.

Valmy acquired great reputation when Pierre Bardou's son-in-law, Jules Pams, became the owner of the castle. He received all the greatest personalities of the beginning of the century, including Marechal Joffre. Jules Pams was among the most important political figures of the 3rd Republic; he was named minister several times, and notably the Minister of Agriculture.

After his death, Victor Peix bought the castle and outbuildings. He increased the production of the wines of Valmy by extending the property and created the trademarks Valmy and Valmya. These high-quality wines gained fame very quickly. In 1989, the vines of Valmy were pulled out and the terraces were allowed to lie fallow. But twenty hectares have been replanted and produced high-quality wines for a few years.

Castle of Pujol
The origins of this castle are not well known. Experts think that it was built on a small natural hill in the late 11th century. It was an important building the Counts of Roussillon enfeoffed to the viscount family of Taxo.

In 1145,  the two parties started armed conflicts with each other about 'the honour of  Pujol '. The victor, the Count of Roussillon, recovered his property. In the late 12th century, the king of Aragon gave up the castle to the Cistercian abbey of Fontfroide (Aude). The monks converted the edifice into an important barn.

It seems that Pujol remained under the authority of Fontfroide until the 16th century. Then, the castle was given to private individuals. It had finally been bought by the commune of Argelès a few years ago. As it has never been abandoned, it still has important medieval vestiges. The most remarkable remnant is the large square tower which is practically untouched and originally served as a keep. This building offers exceptional architectural qualities, notably two stone stairs integrated into the wall.

Close to the tower, a lovely covered fountain made of 'cayrou' known as 'd'en Caldava' should be noted too. This fountain used to supply water to the surrounding area of the castle and without doubt the castle itself. The fountain has just been restored by the association Capbreu.

Castle of Taxo d'Avall and Viscount's Chapel
The site would be of Roman origin, but it was first mentioned in 897 with the name of 'Tacione'. During the medieval period, the castle of Taxo was the birthplace of a family holding the title of Viscount of Roussillon.

Today, it has important remnants. Still stands part of the crenellated surrounding walls dating from the 11th century and two semi-circular corner towers which were built later. A 15th-century cylindrical tower can also be seen, probably in relation to the signal stations of la Massane and Madeloc.

In the centre of the fortified enclosure stands a surprising chapel dedicated to Saint-Martin and the Holy Cross. This edifice was first mentioned in 1145 but its construction might date from the 11th century.  The chapel of Taxo is a single edifice according to its plan presenting two naves having the same dimensions and a single apse. After the French Revolution, the church loses its role of place of worship and is converted into a sheepfold. The building will have this agricultural function untile the 1980s.

Several openings had been made on the exterior walls to be used as doors or windows, but they had been closed afterwards. The roof has been restored in order to protect the edifice and adjoining buildings from water

The vestiges of the Castle of Taxo d'Avall are situated to the north of Argelès, on the edge of RN 114.  To reach the castle from Argelès village, follow  the road towards Elne and 'avenue d'Hürth'  in the direction of Perpignan. Before reaching the two-lane road, at the roundabout, follow the signpost 'Taxo d'Avall'.

Saint-Ferréol-de-la-Pave

The Hermitage of Saint-Ferréol-de-la-Pave consists of two parts easily identifiable and built during two different periods.

The oldest part is a chapel of pre-Romanesque origin made up of a unique nave ending with an apse the ground plan of which is in the shape of a horseshoe. It is a chapel belonging to a period of transition between pre-Romanesque and Romanesque dating from the 10th century. It was consecrated to  St Alexandre.

The path leading to la Pave is a section of the very ancient track which permitted to traverse the Albères by climbing the Massane valley. It was the route followed by Philippe le Hardi in 1285 during the crusade against Pere and Gran d'Aragon.

The chapel became the property of Argelès in 1858, the same year when it was consecrated to Saint-Ferréol. It was listed as a historic building in 1991.

La Massane Tower
The present monument was built in the late 13th century by order of Jaime II of Majorca.  The first reference of La Massane Tower dates from 1293 and it was called 'Torre de Pérabona' (in Catalan) which means "Tower of Good Stone".

It was difficult to build it as it was standing on a narrow rocky crest, which required the building of a wall 8 metres high. At that time, the tower comprised two covered rooms which were without doubt surmounted, as it was the case for the rooms in its twin tower, La  Madeloc (Port-Vendres area), by a crenellated terrace. The ground-floor, still intact, presents a remarkable entrance door surmounted by a lintel with double corbels. Loopholes were made in the walls of this room and a narrow passageway permitted communicating with the first floor.

The tower had been a lookout tower for a long time since, in 1728, its garrison camped in 'place d'Armes' and soldiers were watching through its loopholes and at the observation post at the post of the tower by turns.
In the 1980s, a voluntary team gathered in 'l'association de restauration de la Tour de la Massane' (the association of La Massane Tower restoration) and started the restoration of the edifice. After 7 years of difficult and dangerous restoration works, they presented their work to the inhabitants of Argelès.

700 years after its construction, la Massane, symbolizing Argelès and bearing witness to its past, is still peering over the town. Situated at an approximate altitude of 800 metres, La Massane Tower offers scenic views over the plain of Roussillon and Mediterranean coastline.

Chapel of Saint-Laurent-du-Mont

The Romanesque church of Saint-Laurent-du-Mont is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful architectural treasures to be found in the mountain of Argelès. Saint Laurent was built without interruption in the 12th century and became a parish church that served the numerous 'mas' nestled in the hills.

Built from a very simple plan, as it was the case for most Romanesque churches, the chapel of Saint-Laurent was a very modest monument entirely built with freestones. Only a few ornamental elements on the outside of the chapel counterbalance the austerity of the structure.

At the end of the Ancien Regime, Saint Laurent, which had become a simple rural chapel, was sold as a national property to François de Palmarole, an empire general, who wanted to prevent it from being diverted from its religious function.

Then, the chapel was abandoned. In 1939, the building provided housing for Spanish refugees fleeing from the war. It had even been converted into a sheepfold for some time, but it has found its original function again recently. This very lovely site can be the final of a pleasant walking route. The chapel is managed by l'association des Ermitages d'Argelès' (the association of Argelès Hermitages).

 Notre-Dame-de-Vie and Saint Jérôme

The main building comprises, on the ground floor, a sanctuary the date of construction of which is not known, and, on the first floor, the hermit's home (today converted into a private flat). The south-facing wall of the edifice was built on the rock. In the block was built a chapel giving shelter to a statue of Sainte Madeleine after whom the neighbouring area is named.

A small monument in pre-Romanesque style stands nearby. It is consecrated to Saint Jérôme. The building comprising a unique nave based on quadrangualar plan and ending with a semi-circular apse which should have been built in the 10th century.

At the end of the Ancien Regime, several families of Argelès shared the edifices of the church property between themselves. A few years ago, Notre-Dame-de-Vie was bought and restored by the association of Argelès Hermitages who makes it last throughout time.
It was listed as a historic building in 1944. Today the chapel is open to the public and the surrounding area have been equipped so that it can received visitors.

Dolmens

Dolmens are the oldest monuments of our region. They are ossuaries, collective burial chambers which may date from the first Metal Age (period between  2500 and 1500 BC).

According to experts, there are twelve dolmensin the Albères Mountains. There are two dolmens in Argelès.

The dolmen of the 'Cova de l'Alarb': well-preserved and modest, was built with materials found on the same site. It consists of several upright stones supporting one top flattish stone. This stone framework used as a tomb was without doubt originally covered with a tumulus.

Further up, after walking during 15 minutes, stands, on the left of the path and on a small mound, the dolmen of the 'Collet de Cotlioure' without its top stone lying close-by. Today, these vestiges are of great scientific interest. They were listed as historic monuments in 1958. They bear witness to a past which is not much known.

Pine Forest

Argelès-sur-mer - the green resort - boasts over 8,000 hundred-year-old pine trees, among which 2,000 are found in the pine forest. It was in 1854, on the initiative of the town council that a 12-ha pine forest was planted on the seafront. More than 160 years later, the pine forest is still the greenbelt of Argelès-sur-mer and symbol of the resort. Both the inhabitants of Argelès and tourists enjoy strolling around in it or having a picnic.

In the 1930s, the first municipal campsite was set up in the pine forest. A guard determines camping places and collects tourist tax. Today, the pine forest is still a haven of coolness and greenery. In order to preserve the renewal of species, the town council undertook successive regenerations (1978, 1981, 1984) by replanting 1,500 pine trees.

The last regeneration took place in 2003. About a hundred trees, attacked by the larger pineshoot beetle, were uprooted. 200 were replanting with the prime objective which is the redensification of clearings. This regeneration campaign has been continuing each year since then. In order to protect the pine forest, replantations are a mix of parasol pines and maritime pines.

Park of Valmy

It is provides the most beautiful views over the town, beach, port and Albères Mountains overlooking it. From the panoramic viewpoint, you can admire the whole coastline in a site steeped in history.

The Castle of Valmy is a private property, but the Park of Valmy, recently acquired by the town, offers the opportunity to discover the Mediterranean flora thanks to a nature trail.

Far from the bustle of the beach in summer, the 6-hectare park is a haven of coolness and greenery where it is so pleasant to have a picnic in areas specifically equipped close to waterfalls, fountains and children's playgrounds.

Valmy hosts a number of events including 'Floralies' (Flower Days) in April, 'Festival les Déferlantes' of Argelès-sur-Mer., 'Aplec' of Valmy (gathering of sardanas), International Art Exhibition and Flamenco Festival.

Since 2008, a nature trail comprising some fifteen stopping places and an interpretation path have been created in the heart of the park.

Seafront Promenade

Among all the coastal towns of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Argelès-sur-Mer is the town that boasts the longest coastline: nearly 10 kilometres of coasts including 7 of sandy coast and 2 of rocky coves. The jewel of the seaside is the promenade that is parallel to the beach.

Built in the 1980s, 1.6km long, planted with lawns and Mediterranean vegetation, it stretches from Port Argelès to the pine forest giving shelter to several thousands of trees. There were three stages during the building works (1973, 1990 and 1994)

On foot, by bike, by rollers, walking or running, the seafront is, winter and summer alike, the favourite place for pleasant walks by the sea.

Situated on Argelès-sur-Mer territory, the National Nature Reserve of La Massane, also called forest of Les Couloumates, located in the eastermost part of Les Albères Mountains, stretches for 300ha, at altitudes between 600 and 1150m with Pic des 4 Termes as its highest point.

It is situated at the heart of a real bio-geographical crossraods. Located only 5km from the Mediterranean, it is just about thirty kilometres from the highest summits of the Pyrenees and covers the upper part of the catchment area of the Massane river. The major part of this forest includes beech trees.

Since the foundation of Arago Laboratory at Banyuls-sur-mer in 1872, La Massane has become one of the classical stations for international zoology, in the same way as Fontainebleau forest. Under the Prefect, the 'association des Amis de la Massane' (Association of the Friends of La Massane) is in charge of the scientific management and activities in the Reserve.

National Nature Reserver of Mas Larrieu

Situated to the north of Argelès-plage, being  145ha in area, the National Nature Reserve is one of the last wild natural sites of the plain and coastline of Roussillon.
Interspersed with scattered woods and reed beds bordering the branches of the Tech river, the Reserve has preserved its natural appearances as well as its uniqueness as regards biology.
The visit allows to explore a wide variety of landscapes created by the juxtaposition, on a small area, of different natural environments: reed beds, meadows, dunes and mouths of the Tech river.
You will admire a great number of birds including grey herons, common black-headed gulls, European bee-eaters and gulls.
A nature study trail, wayside exhibits, a picnic area have been created to help visitors enjoy the nature reserve.

Réseau Culturel

Land of History and Heritage

Réseau Culturel Terre Catalane is an association gathering the major heritage sites of the Pyrénées-Orientales

Réseau Culturel Terre Catalane offers theme itineraries to visitors who wish to regain strength amidst the privacy and beauty of heritage sites.

In the region of the Pyrénées Méditerranée, 4 audio tours of the ethnological heritage propose to discover, with your friends or family, the lives of fishermen, miners, the stories of the Albères Mountains and Prats de Mollo.

Listen with background music to the confidences of the elders and the words of writers ... to see and experience these landscapes shaped by nature and men.

4 Audio Tours in the Pyrénées Orientales

Walks and Hikes in the Pyrénées Orientales

Our department boasts many treasures: varied sceneries each one more beautiful than the next one, an important architectural heritage, vivid traditions and culture. Five of our villages have won prizes as "the most beautiful villages in France" (Eus, Evol, Mosset, Castelnou and Villefranche-de-Conflent).

The General Council directly manages natural sites (listed site of Les Bouillouses, Voluntary Nature Reserve of Nyer (ENSID), Marine Nature Reserve of Cerbère-Banyuls, the Lake of Villeneuve de la Raho) and cultural sites (the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, the Priory of Serrabona, the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Anges, the Royal Castle of  Collioure).

So, you will marvel at a wide range of lanscapes. A great number of artists, in particular painters, fell under the region's charm. Attracted by the light and special colours bathing our land. Matisse et Derain, ont par exemple élu domicile à Collioure en 1905 et ont contribué au courant fauviste.

Whatever the story you would liket to tell, here you will always find the place that could meet your expectations and requirements. From the mountain to the sea, not to mention the wide expanses of the plain, from winter to summer, from medieval villages to spas, behind a street or a tree, each period of our History will be brought to life.

Several kilometres of waymarked footpaths, 15 summits reaching the altitude of over 2800 metres, a frontier crestline with Spain and Andorra, the Pyrénées Orientales welcomes you to walking tours in the Catalan sunshine and always the Mediterrranean on the horizon.
